Load Factor Requirements for Route Viability
Following KLM's decision to cut unprofitable routes, one solution to improve airline economics would be to implement mandatory minimum load factors. Airlines operating a route would need to maintain at least 50% passenger capacity utilization to retain operating rights.
This constraint would:
- Reduce excess capacity flights that drain resources and inflate fuel costs across the industry
- Concentrate routes among carriers best positioned to meet demand efficiently
- Incentivize consolidation on profitable corridors while allowing carriers to exit marginal ones
- Lower per-seat costs through higher occupancy rates, offsetting fuel price pressures
- Decrease environmental harm through limited flights
Rather than individual airlines canceling flights reactively, regulators could establish a competitive allocation system where only carriers demonstrating consistent 50%+ load factors retain slot availability at congested hubs like Schiphol.
